What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength and appearance. Crowns are used in all sorts of situations - to protect a tooth that's been heavily filled or had root canal treatment, to repair a tooth that's broken or worn down, to cover a discoloured tooth, or to sit on top of a dental implant as the final restoration.

Modern crowns are made from materials that closely match the look and feel of natural teeth. They're cemented permanently in place, so once fitted you can eat, drink and smile with them just as you would with your own teeth. Looked after well, a crown can last for many years - and for our patients in Bedford and Bedfordshire, that often means a tooth they thought they'd lose is comfortably back in service.

Is a dental crown the right option for me?

A crown is often the right choice when a filling alone isn't enough - for example if a tooth is heavily decayed, badly cracked, worn down, or has just had root canal treatment and needs strengthening. Crowns are also routinely used as the final restoration on top of dental implants, and to improve the appearance of a tooth that's discoloured beyond what whitening can fix.

If your tooth is mostly healthy and just slightly chipped or stained, you might be better off with a smaller, less invasive option like a filling, composite bonding or a veneer. And if the issue is mainly cosmetic across several front teeth, a veneer or smile makeover approach may suit you better.

We'll always be honest at your appointment. If a less invasive option would do the job, we'll say so - we don't believe in doing more dentistry than your tooth actually needs.

My recent appointment at Teamcare Dental Practice was an extraction. I was apprehensive! Steven Murphy made me feel at ease by explaining the process and then giving a running commentary as he extracted my broken tooth. I found this helpful. Before leaving, I was given information about aftercare. I expected my gum to be painful for a few days, but it wasn't. I only took two paracetamol after the anaesthetic wore off.

Saw the new dental hygienist on 12th March. He was very thorough and talked me through the procedures asking for input where appropriate. After my treatment he demonstrated how to correctly use my inter dental brushes ,with me holding a mirror so I could see. Much appreciated as it turns out I have not been doing it entirely correctly. My teeth looked and felt very healthy and unstained after my visit and I am booked up for my next appointment already! Many thanks.

I've been coming to Steven Murphy at Teamcare for many years and the service is always excellent, reassuring and pain-free. As a slightly nervous patient I am always well looked after and treated with the utmost sensitivity. Thank you.

Frequently asked questions about dental crowns in Bedford

How long do dental crowns last?

Looked after well, modern dental crowns typically last 10 to 15 years - often considerably longer. Day-to-day care is similar to looking after natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing and routine check-ups being key to longevity.

What are dental crowns made of?

Most crowns we fit are made from porcelain or all-ceramic materials, which closely match the look of natural teeth. Other options include porcelain bonded to a metal base, gold and zirconia. We'll talk through the right choice for your tooth at your appointment.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Tooth preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel anything during the procedure itself. Some patients notice mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards, which usually settles quickly.

How is a crown different from a veneer?

A veneer covers just the front surface of a tooth, mainly for cosmetic reasons. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when a tooth needs both protection and restoration - for example after root canal treatment or when there's significant damage.

Will my crown look natural?

Yes. Modern porcelain and ceramic crowns are designed to match the colour, translucency and texture of your natural teeth, and we work with skilled lab technicians to get the look right.

Can I have a crown on a dental implant?

Yes - this is one of the most common ways to restore a missing tooth. The crown is custom-made and attached to the dental implant once your bone has healed, giving you a natural-looking final result.

How do I look after my crown?

Treat it like a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, floss or use interdental brushes around it, avoid using your teeth as tools (no opening packets!) and keep up with your routine hygiene visits and check-ups.

What if my crown comes loose?

Get in touch as soon as you can. In some cases it can be re-cemented; in others a new crown may be needed. The sooner we see it, the more options we'll have.
