Why modern technology matters at Teamcare

Dentistry has changed enormously over the last few decades. Treatments that used to be uncomfortable, unpredictable or only possible at specialist hospitals are now routine - and a lot of that progress comes down to the technology behind the scenes.

At Teamcare Dental Practice on Goldington Road, we've invested in the technology that makes the biggest difference to your appointment. That doesn't mean every shiny new gadget on the market - it means tools that genuinely make treatment more comfortable, more accurate and easier to plan. The kind of equipment that means you'd much rather sit in our chair than the one you remember from years ago.

For our patients in Bedford and Bedfordshire, the result is simple: faster appointments, less mess, fewer surprises and better long-term results. Whether you're coming in for a routine check-up, exploring Invisalign, or considering dental implants, modern technology runs quietly in the background of nearly every visit.

Why patients across Bedford choose Teamcare for modern dental care

Technology is only as good as the team behind it. Here's why patients across Bedfordshire trust us with their care.

iTero 3D scanner on-site

Our digital scanner replaces messy putty impressions with detailed, accurate 3D scans - faster and far more comfortable.

3D CT scanning for implants

We use 3D CT imaging at a trusted partner practice nearby to plan complex cases like dental implants down to the millimetre.

Digital X-rays as standard

Digital imaging gives clearer pictures with less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and your dentist can see them on screen straight away.

Up-to-date materials and equipment

From modern composite filling materials to ceramic crowns and clear aligners, we use materials and tools that reflect current best practice.

Smile simulations you can see

Our iTero scanner can show you a digital preview of your future smile before you commit to treatment - particularly useful for Invisalign.

Continuing professional development

Our principal dentist Jai Basudev has completed numerous postgraduate courses and a postgraduate certificate in Dental Education to stay up to date.

The iTero 3D scanner

The iTero scanner is one of the most useful pieces of technology in modern dentistry, and we use it across many of our treatments. It's a small handheld wand that captures detailed 3D images of your teeth and gums in a matter of minutes - no putty, no goo, no awkward gagging.

For our patients in Bedford, the iTero changes the appointment experience in three big ways. First, it's much more comfortable than traditional impressions. Second, it's far more accurate, which means better-fitting crowns, veneers and aligners. And third, it's faster - both for the appointment itself and for the lab work that follows.

The iTero is particularly important for Invisalign treatment. We can scan your teeth on the day of your free consultation and show you a digital simulation of your potential future smile, so you can see what's possible before committing to anything. It's also used for designing crowns, veneers and bridges, and for planning implant restorations.

3D CT scanning for advanced treatment planning

For more complex cases - particularly dental implants and full mouth implant treatment - we use 3D CT scanning to plan treatment with millimetre precision. CT imaging shows not just your teeth, but the bone, nerves and sinuses underneath, in three dimensions.

This is the difference between guessing and knowing. With a CT scan, your implant clinician can see exactly how much bone is available, plan the precise angle and depth of every implant, and avoid important anatomical structures with confidence. The result is more predictable, longer-lasting implants - and a calmer experience for you on treatment day.

We use a trusted partner practice nearby for our CT scans, which is around a 20-minute drive from Teamcare. The scan itself takes just a few minutes, and we use the resulting 3D data to plan your treatment carefully before you ever sit in the chair.

Digital X-rays

You'll have digital X-rays as part of your routine check-up at Teamcare, alongside any other appointments where they're needed. Digital X-rays do everything traditional film X-rays did, but better.

They use significantly less radiation, which matters if you're having multiple X-rays over the course of a year. They're available on screen instantly, so your dentist can show you what they're seeing and explain any findings clearly. They produce clearer images, which means smaller issues like early decay or root infections are easier to spot. And they're more environmentally friendly - no chemicals, no waste.

Digital X-rays at Teamcare include bite wing X-rays (which we include as standard with examinations), periapical X-rays for individual teeth, and panoramic OPG X-rays for a wider view of your jaw and teeth.

Modern materials and equipment

Beyond the headline scanners and X-rays, the technology behind the scenes makes a quiet but significant difference to your care. We use modern composite materials for tooth-coloured fillings that bond directly to the tooth and last longer than older alternatives. We use LED curing lights to harden composite quickly and reliably. We use modern, comfortable dental chairs designed to keep you supported for longer appointments.

Our crowns, veneers and bridges are produced by skilled dental laboratories using modern ceramic materials that match the colour and translucency of natural teeth far better than older porcelain-on-metal options. Our orthodontic treatments use Invisalign aligners (one of the most researched aligner systems in the world) and modern fixed brace systems for cases that need more precision.

It's not flashy and most patients won't notice it - but every choice we make about the materials and equipment we use is designed to give you a more comfortable appointment and a better long-term result.

What this means for you

The practical benefits of modern dental technology are easy to summarise: shorter appointments, less mess, more accurate work, fewer surprises and better long-term outcomes. You'll spend less time waiting around with putty in your mouth, less time worrying about whether a result will look natural, and less time travelling between practices for advanced imaging.

You'll also see and understand more about your own care than was ever possible before. From digital X-rays you can look at on screen, to a 3D smile simulation showing you what Invisalign could do, modern technology turns dentistry from something done to you into something done with you - in a way you can actually follow.

For nervous patients, this matters even more. Knowing what's coming, seeing what your dentist sees, and understanding the plan in plain English makes treatment far easier to face. Read more about our approach to nervous patients.

I first attended as an emergency patient, in pain, stressed, frustrated ... I hadn't been able to get a BUPA appointment within a week, but with the online booking system at this practice, I was able to be seen within 24hrs. My dentist, Pep Marin, was amazing and calming, giving me great confidence from the minute we met, he explained everything he was planning at every stage and was very good at explaining my problem to me. The emergency treatment was successful and my follow up appointment to repair a missing filling and de-Scale my teeth was equally rewarding. It is very refreshing to have a professional person make your appointment a positive experience. I understood at all times what was involved in my care and I'm came away very impressed. I would recommend them wholeheartedly.

Dr Murphy is always friendly and professional. Good time keeping. I feel very much in safe hands. The dental assistant on this occasion was a new to me and was very friendly and attentive. Thank you for your wonderful care.

Frequently asked questions about our technology in Bedford

Why is iTero better than traditional impressions?

Traditional impressions involve biting into a tray full of putty for several minutes - uncomfortable for some patients and prone to small inaccuracies. The iTero scanner is a handheld wand that captures detailed 3D images in a few minutes, with no putty involved. It's faster, more comfortable and more accurate.

Is the 3D CT scanning at the same practice?

We use a trusted partner practice nearby for our CT scans, around a 20-minute drive from Teamcare. The scan itself only takes a few minutes, and we use the resulting 3D data back at our practice to plan your treatment carefully.

Are digital X-rays safer than traditional ones?

Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays - typically around 70 to 90 per cent less. They're considered very safe and we only ever take X-rays when there's a clear clinical reason to do so.

Will I be charged extra for the technology?

Routine bite wing X-rays are included in your check-up price. Additional imaging like CT scans is charged separately when needed - we'll always quote you clearly before anything is booked, with no surprises.

Do I have to do anything different to use this technology?

Not at all - using modern technology doesn't change anything about how you book, attend or pay for your appointment. It's all built into your routine care.

Can I see my own scans and X-rays?

Yes, and we genuinely encourage it. Your dentist will show you your X-rays and scans on screen and explain what they're seeing. It's much easier to understand a treatment plan when you can see what's going on.

How often is your technology updated?

We invest in technology when it makes a clear difference to patient care, not just because it's new. We're committed to keeping our equipment current with what works best - and our principal dentist Jai Basudev attends regular professional development courses to stay up to date.

Is dental technology safe for children?

Yes - the same technology we use for adults works just as well for younger patients, often more comfortably than older approaches. The iTero scanner in particular is much easier for children to tolerate than traditional putty impressions.
