What are white fillings?

White fillings - also called composite fillings or tooth-coloured fillings - are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, chips, cracks or wear. Unlike older silver amalgam fillings, white fillings are made from a tooth-coloured resin that bonds directly to your tooth, blending in so well that most people won't notice you've had any work done at all.

Modern composite materials are strong, long-lasting and mercury-free - which is one of the reasons they've become the standard choice in modern dentistry. They also let us preserve more of your natural tooth, since composite bonds to the tooth surface rather than relying on a mechanical fit like amalgam used to.

For our patients in Bedford and Bedfordshire, white fillings are one of the most common reasons for a visit, and we fit them every day. Whether it's a small filling for a newly spotted cavity at your routine check-up, or replacing an older silver filling for a tidier look, we'll keep the appointment calm and the result as discreet as possible.

Your white filling appointment, step by step

Identifying the need for a filling

Most fillings are spotted at a routine check-up or X-ray - sometimes before you've felt any symptoms at all.

01

Discussion of your options

We'll explain what we've found, why a filling is recommended and walk you through any alternatives.

02

Local anaesthetic and tooth preparation

On treatment day, we numb the area gently and remove any decay carefully, preserving as much of the healthy tooth as possible.

03

Placement of the composite

The white filling material is placed in layers, building it up to fill the cavity completely.

04

Shaping and curing

We shape the composite to match the natural contour of your tooth, then harden it using a special light.

05

Final polish and bite check

We polish the filling for a smooth finish and check that your bite feels comfortable before you leave.

Is a white filling the right option for me?

White fillings are the right choice for almost any small to medium-sized restoration in modern dentistry. They work well for newly diagnosed decay, replacing older or failing fillings, repairing small chips, and tidying up worn or discoloured tooth surfaces.

If a tooth is heavily damaged or has very little remaining structure, a filling may not be the best long-term solution - in those cases, a crown or onlay may give you a stronger, longer-lasting result. We'll always give you an honest recommendation rather than placing a filling that may not last.

If you have several older silver fillings you'd like replaced for cosmetic reasons, that's something we're happy to discuss too. We can plan it gradually rather than all in one visit if you'd prefer.

How much do white fillings cost in Bedford?

White filling pricing depends on the size of the cavity and the complexity of the work. We'll give you a clear, written quote before any treatment goes ahead.

Professional yet relaxed appointment, putting me at ease for my procedure. Dr Murphy was very patient and skilled, handling the tools with precision and care. Pain free treatment, which hadn't been the case with previous dentist. The nurse/assistant was very attentive, excellent use of the vacuum and checked in on me a couple of times. All finished in a timely manner with good advice upon leaving to ensure my comfort and success of the treatment. The receptionist was personable and efficient, and the price was very good.

Frequently asked questions about white fillings in Bedford

How long do white fillings last?

Modern composite fillings typically last between 7 and 10 years, often longer with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups. They can wear down over time depending on where they are in the mouth and how heavily you use that tooth.

Are white fillings as strong as silver fillings?

Modern composite is genuinely strong and bonds to the tooth in a way amalgam never did. For most fillings it's the right choice. For very large restorations or back teeth under heavy biting force, your dentist may sometimes recommend a crown or onlay for added strength.

Will my filling be visible?

No - that's the whole point. We carefully match the colour of the composite to your existing tooth, so the filling blends in and is virtually invisible once finished.

Does getting a white filling hurt?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel anything during the appointment itself. Some patients notice mild sensitivity for a day or two afterwards, especially with larger fillings, which usually settles quickly.

Can I have my old silver fillings replaced with white ones?

Yes - this is something we do regularly for patients who'd prefer a more discreet look. We can plan it gradually rather than all in one visit, and we'll talk through whether replacement is genuinely needed or just a cosmetic preference.

Will my filling be sensitive afterwards?

Mild sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure is common for the first few days, especially with larger fillings. If sensitivity persists beyond a week or so, give us a call - sometimes a small bite adjustment is all that's needed.

Can I eat straight after a filling?

Yes - because composite is hardened on the day with a curing light, you can eat as soon as the local anaesthetic wears off. Just be careful not to bite your cheek or tongue while you're still numb.

Are white fillings covered by Denplan?

Members typically benefit from a discount on additional treatments like fillings. We'll talk you through your member price at the appointment.
