We see plenty of nervous patients - and we get it

Dental anxiety is far more common than people realise. For every patient who walks into a practice without a second thought, there's another who's been putting it off for months or years - sometimes even decades. If that sounds like you, you're not alone, and you're certainly not the first.

At Teamcare Dental Practice on Goldington Road, our calm, unhurried approach was built with nervous patients in mind. We take the time to listen, we go at your pace, and we never make you feel rushed, judged or embarrassed about how long it's been since your last visit. Plenty of our patients tell us, often emotionally, that this is the first time they've felt comfortable at a dentist - and that's something we take real pride in.

Whether your worry is about a specific procedure, the smell or sound of a dental practice, or you just don't know where to start, we'll meet you where you are. The first step is always the hardest, but you don't have to take it alone.

Sedation options at Teamcare

For patients who'd like more than a calm environment to help them through treatment, we offer IV sedation on request through a trusted outside agency. Sedation is available for nearly any treatment, although we use it most commonly for larger or longer cases - such as full mouth implants, complex procedures, or anyone who would simply feel much more comfortable being deeply relaxed during their appointment.

IV sedation - what it is: IV (intravenous) sedation is sometimes called "conscious sedation" or "twilight sedation". A medication is given through a small cannula in your hand or arm to put you in a deeply relaxed, drowsy state. You'll still be able to respond to instructions, but you'll feel calm throughout and may have very little memory of the appointment afterwards.

What sedation isn't: Sedation isn't the same as a general anaesthetic. You're not unconscious, and you're not on a ventilator. You're awake but deeply relaxed - and most patients describe the experience as much more pleasant than they expected.

Important to know: Sedation requires a separate assessment with the visiting sedationist beforehand, and you'll need someone to bring you home afterwards. We'll talk you through the practicalities at your initial appointment.

06

Is sedation right for me?

Sedation suits patients who feel that anxiety is genuinely going to stop them having the treatment they need - whether that's a routine check-up, a filling, an extraction, or more involved work like dental implants. It's especially worth considering for longer or more complex appointments, where staying calm for an extended period might feel daunting.

You don't have to decide now whether you want sedation. Many patients come in unsure and find that the calm environment alone is enough. Others find sedation gives them the breathing space they need to finally tackle treatment they've been avoiding for years. Both are completely valid - and we'll talk through your options honestly at your initial appointment.

If sedation isn't the right answer for you, we'll say so. We'll also talk through other supportive techniques like topical numbing, breathing exercises, headphones for music, and simply taking things in shorter sessions. There's almost always a way to make treatment manageable.

From the moment you step into the practice the receptionist's are very friendly and helpful, as a new patient just filled out a form while waiting to be seen, my dentist Pep is very polite and welcoming from the start as I am a very nervous patient he puts you at ease, gives you a few things to divert your attention, shows you items which he is using, talking you through the process as he is doing it, which for people like me is very helpful and makes the experience manageable, I would definitely recommend pep to any nervous person, I'll definitely be using this practice again and as I pay for my treatment it's definitely worth it. Thank you.

Frequently asked questions about nervous patient care in Bedford

I haven't seen a dentist in years - is that a problem?

Absolutely not. We see plenty of patients who've avoided the dentist for many years, and there's no judgement here. Whatever the state of your teeth, we'll take it from where you are now and work forward together.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

A warm welcome at reception, time to chat through your concerns, and only as much examination as you feel comfortable with. If you'd prefer to just have a conversation and go home that day, that's absolutely fine.

Will I have to commit to a lot of treatment straight away?

No. We'll give you an honest assessment of what's needed and a written plan if you'd like one - but there's no pressure to start. Many of our nervous patients take treatment one step at a time, at their own pace.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes - many nervous patients bring a family member or friend along for support. They're welcome to wait in reception or come into the consultation with you, whichever makes you more comfortable.

Is IV sedation safe?

Yes - sedation is provided by a trained sedationist with appropriate monitoring throughout. You'll have a separate assessment beforehand to make sure it's suitable for you, and we'll talk through everything in detail.

Will I be unconscious during sedation?

No. IV sedation puts you in a deeply relaxed, drowsy state - you'll still be able to respond to instructions but you'll feel calm and may not remember much of the appointment afterwards. It's not a general anaesthetic.

How do I get home after sedation?

You'll need a responsible adult to bring you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. You can't drive yourself, use public transport alone or be responsible for children for 24 hours after sedation.

Can I have a check-up under sedation?

While it's most commonly used for treatment, sedation can be considered for an examination if anxiety is severe enough that a check-up alone feels impossible. We'll talk through what's right for you at your initial conversation.
