What is a dental check-up?

A dental check-up - sometimes called a routine examination - is a regular appointment where we look closely at your teeth, gums and soft tissues to spot any issues early, before they become bigger problems. We assess your overall oral health, take any X-rays we need, and give you personalised advice on keeping things healthy at home.

The whole point of a check-up is prevention. Many of the problems we treat - decay, gum disease, worn or cracked teeth - can be caught early, when they're easier and more affordable to deal with. For our patients in Bedford and Bedfordshire, regular check-ups every six to nine months are the foundation of staying out of the dental chair for anything more serious.

At Teamcare on Goldington Road, we've been looking after the same families across Bedford for decades - some of them for several generations. That stability matters, because dental care works best when it's consistent and built on trust.

Who carries out check-ups at our Bedford practice?

Routine dental check-ups at Teamcare are carried out by our principal dentist Jai Basudev and our wider clinical team, who have worked together for over twenty years. You'll usually see the same dentist visit after visit, building a relationship with someone who knows your mouth, your history and what you'd prefer.

How often should I have a dental check-up?

For most adults in Bedford, a check-up every six months is a good rhythm - frequent enough to catch issues early, but not so frequent that it becomes a chore. Some patients with stable, healthy mouths can extend to nine or twelve months, while others with ongoing concerns may benefit from more regular visits.

It's especially worth keeping up with check-ups if you're prone to decay, you've had gum disease, you grind your teeth, you smoke, or you've had significant dental work that needs monitoring. We'll always tell you honestly when your next visit should be, based on what we see at this one.

If it's been a while since your last check-up - or you've been putting it off because you're feeling anxious - please don't worry. We see plenty of patients who haven't been to the dentist in years, and we'll always make the first visit as calm and unhurried as possible. Read more about our approach to nervous patients.

It was useful to have the printed sheet, about how to care for my mouth after the extraction - Thank you. I have had no problems at all.

I have always been extremely nervous about dentists to the point I stopped going for years. I finally built up the courage and had my first consultation today with Jai, he instantly made me feel at ease, he was very easy to talk to and answered all my questions. Really happy with the service I received today.

Frequently asked questions about dental check-ups in Bedford

How long does a dental check-up take?

A routine check-up usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Your first visit as a new patient will be a bit longer - typically 30 minutes - so we have time to take a full history, do a thorough exam and discuss anything important.

What's included in a check-up?

A full examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues, bite wing X-rays where appropriate, an oral cancer screening, and a discussion of any findings. We'll also talk through your home care and any next steps if treatment is needed.

Do I need to register with you to book a check-up?

No - we welcome new patients and you can book your first examination directly online or by giving us a call. We'll register you on the day and have plenty of time to get to know you.

What if I'm nervous about coming to the dentist?

We see plenty of patients who feel anxious about dental visits, and our calm, unhurried approach is designed for exactly that. There's no judgement, no rush and no surprises. Read more about our approach to nervous patients.

What happens if you find something at my check-up?

We'll talk you through what we've found clearly and honestly, explain your options and give you a written treatment plan with costs. You're never under pressure to proceed there and then - take your time and ask any questions you need.

Are X-rays included in the price?

Yes - bite wing X-rays are included in both routine and new patient examinations. Any additional X-rays needed (for example, a panoramic OPG) are charged separately and we'll always explain why before taking them.

Can I book a check-up for my whole family on the same day?

Yes - we offer same-day family appointments where we can, so the whole household can be seen back-to-back. Just mention this when booking.

Do you offer a payment plan for routine care?

Yes - our Denplan membership spreads the cost of your check-ups and hygiene visits into one simple monthly payment, with worldwide dental emergency cover included.
